What a brain aneurysm is

A cerebral aneurysm is a bulge in the wall of a brain artery. Many are found before they cause symptoms. An unruptured aneurysm and an aneurysm that has bled are very different situations: bleeding is an emergency, while an unruptured finding allows for an individualized discussion of risk and options.

An aneurysm does not automatically mean that treatment is needed immediately. Size, location, shape, growth, symptoms, family history, age, and overall health all help guide the discussion.

Why detailed imaging matters

CTA or MRA may first identify the aneurysm. A cerebral angiogram may be useful when the diagnosis or shape is uncertain, or when planning treatment requires a detailed view of its opening, nearby branches, and blood-flow pattern.

These images help the team compare approaches and protect normal vessels. A diagnostic angiogram does not itself seal the aneurysm, and not every aneurysm requires catheter angiography. Ask what additional information is needed in your case.

Monitoring or treatment: comparing the options

Monitoring may include repeat imaging, blood pressure management, and avoiding tobacco. Treatment is considered when the expected benefit is greater than the risks of the procedure.

Endovascular coiling fills the aneurysm with small coils through a catheter; some aneurysms require supporting devices. Flow diversion places a specialized mesh device in the parent artery to redirect blood flow and encourage gradual healing across the aneurysm opening. Microsurgical clipping closes the aneurysm at its base through surgery.

The best approach depends on the aneurysm and the patient. A team discussion may involve neurointerventional and neurosurgical specialists. No option is appropriate for every aneurysm.

Follow-up is part of treatment

An imaging schedule helps check an observed aneurysm for change and assesses a treated aneurysm over time. The test and timing depend on the anatomy, procedure, and previous results.

Before a procedure, ask about the medication plan, recovery, and follow-up imaging. If a device requires antiplatelet medicine, obtain clear written instructions and contact the team before any interruption.

Prepare for a useful consultation

Bring the actual scans as well as the reports, any older imaging for comparison, your medicines, and details of aneurysms or brain hemorrhage in close relatives. Tell the team about new eye symptoms, changes in headache, and smoking or blood pressure concerns.

Ask what features affect your individual risk, what observation would involve, and how each treatment option compares for your anatomy. The aim is a decision you understand—not simply a response to the word aneurysm.

Common questions

Can a small aneurysm be observed?

Often, yes. Small size is one consideration, but location, shape, growth, symptoms, and personal history also matter. Your specialist should explain both the monitoring plan and the reasons for it.

Does a headache mean my aneurysm has ruptured?

Headaches have many causes. A sudden, extremely severe headache—especially with collapse, neck stiffness, vomiting, or neurologic symptoms—needs immediate emergency evaluation.

Do I still need scans after treatment?

Usually, follow-up imaging is part of care. It checks the treated aneurysm and guides any further monitoring or treatment decisions.
